If you are thinking of holding or joining a voting contest, READ THIS FIRST!

"Pure" voting contests refers to contests where winners are purely decided by the number of votes they can get. Those who received the highest votes wins.

"Pure" voting contests are commonly found in Facebook but they can also be held just about anywhere on the internet.

Subsequent contents of this post are referring to "Pure" voting contests even if I may just refer to them as voting contests.

To Companies - Why you shouldn't hold voting contests.

1. You are insulting your customers' effort to put up a good entry, by awarding prizes to winners based on "popularity" rather than quality of entry.

2. You could end up being forced to award prizes to people who submit totally crap and undeserving entries because they are well aware that it's votes that will get them the prize not a well executed entry. How does showcasing crap entries look good on you?

3. You will not be able to do anything about the cheating activity. Why would you want to let these cheaters fleece you of your prize when the whole purpose of holding the contest is to engage and reward your real customers?

4. Perhaps you think holding a voting contest can help you increase the number of people "liking" your page and/or reach out to more customers. But if "these" customers are just fake profiles, created solely just to make up vote numbers, then you are not reaching out to more people. It's back to square one.

5. Even if the people who "like" your page so as to vote for their friends are real, they are really there just to support their friends, not your company and definitely not because they want to find out more about your product offerings. You can hope that you can convert a few of them to become your customers. But if you want to try, then make sure you are drawing in real FB users not ghosts accounts.

6. Perhaps you are holding voting contests because it is the fastest way to increase the number of people "Liking" your page. While that may make you look like as if you your company is damn popular because you have so many people liking your page, we know it's not an accurate reflection.
A certain small time local magazine has such a huge number of people "liking" their page, you would think it is some hot shot international magazine, but it is not. Almost every single contest they hold, and on a very frequent basis, is a voting contest. So it's anyone guess how many "real" fans they actually have. My guess would be very little.
You can hope that your glowing fan base numbers blind side your customers, clients, advertisers etc etc. I wish you all the best that it doesn't backfire.

Some tell tale signs that a company has lots of fake accounts "liking" their page is when they put out a feed, the number of people who bother to comment or like the post with respect to their fan base is very very low, or it's always the same people doing so.

7. Some contestants ask for votes from overseas sites as well. Sure you will have lots of people voting and "liking" your page but say if your target group is the Singapore market, then what's the point of having all these non-residents who is going to "like" your page first then "unlike" you or turn off your feeds later. Worse, if those are fake accounts, then nobody is really reading your feeds.

8. If you insist on holding pure voting contests, be prepared for contestants leaving negative comments and creating ugly scenes on your wall or sometimes at this blog when they think someone is cheating.

9. Be prepared to have your wall littered with people asking for votes and links to other contests coupled with requests to-vote-for-me-if-I-vote-for-you. How does showcasing all these meaningless, senseless canvassing of votes look good on you?

10. Be prepared to deal with questions from contestants asking what are the checks in place to prevent a cheater from winning.

11. Be prepared to receive lots of email with a link to this post.

12. Be prepared to lose customers.

To participants - Why you shouldn't join voting contests.

1. Unless you have 1000 friends and above and you are some sort of mini celebrity where your friends will cast a vote if you ask or help you rally votes, don't join. 95% chance you won't win.

2. There are plenty of "voting" experts out there who have amazing voting prowess. If you are a newbie you are bound to lose out.

3. Think about how far you are willing to go to ask/beg/spam/plead/annoy your friends to vote for you. If it's not very very far, don't join. You won't win the voting experts. And I quote MrDisco from this post. "You can burn out your real life friends. Once or twice it’s amusing, but frequent and regular vote begging can turn you into a social outcast for those who don’t share this addiction. More often than not, by unleashing these contests on your friends you force them to sign up and register on sites just to give you a vote. The cycle of spam continues. People will very quickly learn to ignore you. (The reverse also holds true. You may develop feelings of slight bitterness as you can’t understand why they won’t take 2 minutes out of their day to vote for you.)"

4. The hard work you put in to create the best entry that it can be will not count for anything. You tend to end up competing with undeserving crap entries and still lose to them.

5. It is very very very time consuming. After submitting your entry, you still have tons of work to do such as canvassing for votes, monitoring your competitors vote count and then canvassing for more votes, all the way till closing date. Imagine how much time you are going to spent on this and then not win.

If you really must join, here are some tips for you.

A. Unless you fall into the category in Point 1 above, creating fake accounts is the most certain way to ensure your "pals" will reliably and tirelessly vote for you for every contest you join. Because it is all within your control.

B. Remember to "dress up" your profile. Put up a picture, "like" a few business pages, make a few comments, play a few games and befriend your other fake profiles to look more convincing.

C. When you activate the "fake friend" to vote, might as well make it even more convincing by leaving a comment (where possible) to praise the entry.

D. Form alliances. Look for those who constantly join voting contests and make friends with them. Offer to scratch their back if they scratch yours, ie, vote for me and I will vote for you. Increase your chances of that happening by looking for alliances that are not participating in the same contest as you. And don't just limit to Singaporeans. Go International!

E. Depending on the contest mechanic, sometimes it may be wise to activate all your fake pals early, sometimes it may not be.

- If it's the kind of contest where voters of the top voted entry also stand a chance to win prizes too, then activate all your fake profiles early. That's because those who are aiming for just the voter's prize will tend to cast votes to those who stand a better chance of winning.

- For others, a good strategy is to lie low first and hope none of the rest of the contestants is on their guard. Then when it comes to the last day or last hour before contest ends, then super activate all your fake friends to vote all at one go!

F. Try changing names often so it makes it difficult for people to find out it's you who win all the time or who have a truck load of fake profiles. Best if you don't have an English name in your IC. So if your name is say Li Ah Kow, you can create many FB accounts with names like Michael Li, Johnson Li, David Li, Samuel Li etc to join different contests. If anybody asks, it is easy to explain that most people call you Michael Li (Or insert whatever English name) but my name is actually Li Ah Kow, on my IC. Everybody will be none the wiser, if you don't get find out. Be careful if you surname is not very common.

G. Go high tech. Learn to cheat. Here's one resource for you. Also learn how to switch IPs so that you can vote multiple times. There are websites out there that teach you how to do it, as a contestant found out.

H. Waste your life away by asking for votes everywhere. Contest Mob has a wide compilation here. Those may be sites that are out of Singapore but who cares if the organisers don't.

I. Here's another site to exchange votes. It's a FB page specially set up for people to exchange votes! Whoever set up that page should collect a fee man. If you need further evidence that plenty of people out there have many fake accounts under the belt, look no further than this link. And here's another one. http://www.facebook.com/Vote.and.Poll.Exchange

J. Too lazy to private message everyone or you are not able to get those with 100 votes to vote for you because you are too lazy to even create 100 fake accounts to vote for others back? Don't worry, you can BUY votes! Like from this site! Pay by Paypal some more. Very convenient!

How this Post came about.

What triggered this post is because an Anonymous reader wanted a reply from me on why we are still posting voting contests despite how I keep speaking out against it.

The fact is even as I may dislike voting contests or online games which can be easily hacked, we have been posting them up still, just lesser now.

The Anonymous reader also thinks that as long as advertisers pay us, we seem all ready to eat back our words for money.

And so the idea was born to write this post. This post will list down all the reasons why I think holding voting contest is a bad move, why joining one is an equally bad decision, and what tricks people are resorting to cheat. Readers are very welcome to add your point of view in the comments section.

So are we eating back our words? No.

Despite all that has been said, if advertisers still engage us to promote a contest, we are not going to say no. We offer a simple broadcast service for a small fee. We are not here to qualify our advertisers and decide if their contests are good enough for us to post. If companies want to hold voting contests, for reasons only known to them, that is their decision and we are not going to interfere.

On the bright side, the good thing that came out from all these debate about voting contests is that a sort of a forum is now created, via an easy access to a you-must-be-blind-if-you-can't-see-this side banner, for all of us to share our viewpoints about voting contests. It will also be a lot more convenient for us to advise our advertisers about the potential pitfalls of holding a pure contest.

If you are from a company and need more convincing, here's what others have to say about voting contests.
10 Reasons Why I Don’t Enter Voting Contests
Online Voting Systems are Clearly Broken but How Can They be Fixed?
How do we really feel about online voting contests? What sucks about them?

I bet you a million dollars that you won't be able to find a link that praises the ingenuity or fun factor of voting contests.

Compiling a list of people who regularly win voting contest.

The idea to compile a list of people who regularly win such voting contest was also mooted. I am for the idea.

I quote reader Jim.
I support the idea of listing the names, and forwarding the data to contest organisers. We are not making accusations here, we are letting the organisers decide what they want to do. The rational for doing this is not to stand a greater chance to win prizes. Rather, but more importantly, i do not want to see people going away with prizes contests after contests won from unscrupulous methods.

I couldn't have said it better than him.

So here are the Rules and Regulation of posting winner's information at the comments section. May I kindly ask that you adhere to them.

1. Please post name of the contest, winner's names, no. of votes garnered, link to the contest page, any evidence of dishonest activity only AFTER the contest has concluded.

2. Please restrict posting results of contests to those that concluded in Year 2009. Within the first 3 months of a new year, we will endeavor to finish deleting all winning results of contests that concluded in the year before last.

3. Please only post details of winners who had won in pure voting contests or the pure voting segment of a contest.

4. If you feel your name shouldn't be here, it will be wiser to drop us a private email to ask for the removal of comment, than kicking a big fuss and drawing more attention to yourself.

5. Please do not email us to remove your name even if you can furnish evidence/information/proof/whatever that you won fair and square. We don't have the time to go through them and decide if you won legitimately or not.

A winner who has won a pure voting contest, may not mean that the person has cheated. If you didn't cheat, even if your name is mentioned here, you will be able to stand up to scrutiny. If you are not the type to cheat, your friends, colleagues and family will know and that is all that should matter.

Finally, please be reminded that contest results are publicly available information. There is nothing wrong with reproducing them here.

My solution to a fairer and better voting contests? Do without voting altogether unless you are able to get a crowd of voters who are not related to contestants or who don't have vested interests to vote. And start thinking of more ways to engage your real customers, earn true loyalty and win over heart and minds. Amassing a high number count of "fans" through voting contests doesn't increase your real customer base and anybody who thinks so is just being naive and myopic.

Ok. That's it.

Please feel free to share your views. Thank you all in advance for your contributions to making the contest world a better place to compete in.
