Goodbye Kopitiam

Hi folks,

Well I guess the discussion on voting contests gave us a good insight on how people who are for it, or against it, or the fence sitters feel about it. Thanks for answering my call to share your views. I appreciate it. To outsider, no apologies needed. All views are valid even if they are laced with insults or profanities.

On the contrary, I think open discussions are healthy. People who can see this as a healthy discourse will be able to see the objective in the discussion. People who thinks everybody else here is angry will see it as pointless argument and miss the point.

Anyway, whether you are still going to join voting contests or not, or cheat to increase your votes that is your own decision. But for sure, I will not post up any pure voting contests. Those who have exceptional strengths in this area, I am afraid you have to look for other sources to find your kind of competition and competitors to pit yourself against.

I hope I will still continue to receive contest leads from you all. No kopitiam but still have email la. My email is

contestjunkie888@gmail.com

It might be a bit inconvenient but it is not all the inconvenient la. Still very fast one :)

Reminder once again. If you are joining a contest and it requires you to forward to 10 friends, contestjunkie888@gmail.com is not your friend ah...

Ani thanks. I have given it many thoughts, since Monday. The conclusion at the end of each day is the same.

ED, u r giving the 2 jokers too much credit. They were a factor but only just 1 part of the reason why I decide to close the Kopitiam.

ContestLover has just started temping and trying to get used to the grind of working life ;ppp He's too tired now after each working day to post contests. So when he get used to it all, he'll start posting again. Ooi dude, don't take too long ok? ;p

As for me... This is my peak period. Only at the end of the year then got some lull period. If we are slow in posting, don't scold us ok?

We are going to be really selective in what we post. Good contests with good prizes will get higher priority. Shitty contests, lousy prizes etc will not get posted.

If you wonder why the leads you send in are not posted, it will be due to one or more of the following reasons below.

1. Shitty contest
2. Lousy prizes
3. Posted already
4. Spam contest
5. We busy and the contest just ain't that big a deal to post
6. Purchase required
7. No proper TnC
8. Mystery prize
9. Prizes not worth the effort

I guess you won't get to hear much of movies, win premiums or goody bags kind of contests here anymore. If you want to join those, I recommend Cornflict's blog. I believe Lobang also posts his regular leads at Cornflict too, right Lobang? Cornflict is also busy and ploughing away at his Industrial Attachment right now. Hey let us know when you are back in action yah? :)

Companies, stop insulting our efforts

Of voting contests...

Johnny, u dun know why William is so lucky? Whatchu talking about? It is obvious that contest is not about luck right? C'mon, it's about voting right? U guys said it! What has luck got to do with it? Haiyah, so spare me the fake "I didn't think I will be so lucky" or "I don't know why he is so lucky" comments. And why do u think the Gorgeous contestant's votes garnered is ridiculous when u subscribe to the thought that it is fair game that if one wants to win, then get more ppl to vote for you? He did what everybody else does if they want to win voting contests so why chide him? You think he doesn't have 58701 friends? Frankly I don't think so too. But maybe he has 180 of William-kind-of-friends and assuming William has 330 friends, there you go! Mr Gorgeous has 59400 friends! If that still sounds impossible, so ok Mr Gorgeous cheated, maybe. But if he cheated, who deserves the biggest scolding? It is the contest organiser. Not Mr Gorgeous or William. I feel very strongly that contest organisers should be responsible in holding a fair contest.

One thing I do agree with you Johnny is indeed after so many of such voting kind of contest, it is really up to individual. There are people who have the ability to keep coming up tops in these type of contests, either because they really do have that kind of friends reach or are willing to spend time spamming / create new accounts whatever. So go right ahead. No one can stop you. But I am going to state now, don't tell me about it here at the Kopitiam. I don't want to hear about lousy contests nor who have won it. But if you say, "I won because I garnered the most number of votes" or even "I am the biggest spammer so I win", for being real, maybe I will still congratulate you.

I can tell a mile away which are the kind of voting contests to avoid, so it's fine for me but some readers especially the new one can't tell yet. Maybe next time I shld add a warning like this:

No need to submit yr handsomest or prettiest picture. An ugly one can liao. It is about having friends (Either imaginary or not, doesn't matter). As long as u have many to vote for u, u win. (If you still don't win, then erm... maybe you just don't have William's kind of charisma to get into the judges good books?)

But seriously, do u all think contests should really go this way? Do you all care? This is the time to say something. I will like to know please. I hope you will share your comments here or at the chat box. Please tell me whether you care how contests are being run or not? Does it bother you? Or are you the type who just join and join. Got win then good lor. If don't win then don't win lor? Never mind.

Moving on to another point, if an organisation keeps holding the same type of voting contests, do u really think the whole idea of it is 2 attract more people to the website? What good is it if it is always the same bunch of friends visiting the website? Yes you get spike in visitorship everytime you hold a contest but do you really attain growth. Organisations or executives who are only concern with web hits and not growth are really just sleeping on their job. Why aren't they thinking up of better ways to attract participation, to make the contest a better experience in order to gain or retain customers?

Likewise for William. If u want to let us know who won the Stylish competition, u can direct us to this page.
http://www.divaasia.com/article/2773 Why always direct us to your blog? Because you get spike in hit rate? Do u only get spike in visitorship when you come here and announce you won something? But is your readership base really growing?

I shall in no uncertain terms state this now. I hate voting contest. I abhor, dislike, loath, diapprove, condemn the type of contests where the winner is decided purely based on votes. Why because it is an INSULT to a contestant's efforts. Companies, you put up themes, get the contestants to dress up, take photos, write essays and then decide on the winner based on votes? We put in an effort to submit an entry that best reflect your theme and all you care about is your hit rate? Shame on you. If you think the world is going to come by to cast a vote for the most deserving entry just because you are giving away some prize to a lucky voter, you are being really naive. It doesn't work that way. That is because most people (excluding the folks here) don't even bother to join contest or care about some $100 shopping voucher let alone cast a vote to someone they don't even know. So who votes? They will be friends of contestants. If you are happy with that or just want to have numbers to show for, then don't bother to call it "In Search for the Most Compatible Couple or Handsomest Person" contest ok? Just call it "Those with most friends, win!" contest, can liao.

I have said this before and I am saying it again. Companies, for goodness sake, please select the winners yourself. If you want public participation, then go choose 10 pics or something that best convey your theme and put them up for public voting. Ok fine. If you want William n Mr Gorgeous and all his friends to be part of your database, then shortlist 10 entries based on highest votes but choose the top 5 winners yourself. I can't make you do as I say but I can choose which contest go up here. So folks, if you see pure voting kind of contests, please don't send in the leads and also don't tag it at the chatbox please. If I see it, they will all be deleted.

Smudger, I'll hv to add that, William did spam b4 but after warning he stopped. So where's William in the midst of all these? N how r u related to William, Johnny?

Ok whether you agree or disagree with my views? This is the time to say it. But don't tell me to cool it or chill. I mean, I know I will probably come across as sounding angry but I am not. And I don't see the need to put in smiley faces just to tone down things a bit. You guys know where I am coming from right? I just want to have an intellectual discourse about this and know how you folks here feel about this issue.
