888th post!

Guess what?

This is the Feeling Lucky Today? blog's 888th post!

888 leh! OMG! I find it quite unbelievable that we have put up 888 posts of contests, ramblings and nonsense. That's freaking hell lots of post lor.

Heheh... I also can't believe I lasted so long and that I am still going on! ;p Haha But I think I have reached a comfortable level. With the help of co-author Contest Lover, things are a lot more manageable provided he doesn't go hide out in the forest for long stretches of time.

I really must thank him and in this very happy and joyous occasion of reaching the very auspicious 888th post, I will like to take the opportunity to declare my gratitude and admiration for this lovely chap. He's a funny guy. He's a emo guy. He's a hardworking, easy going, entertaining, really fun to tease and good sparring (in terms of teasing la) partner. You the best, CL!... as long as you stop doing the easy posts and leave all the complicated ones for me to put up.

There used to be 3 more co-authors. Good Day, Eddie and Contest4life. Remember them? Because they were weighed down by other commitments I felt it was better that they go focus on the more important things in their lives. Well you see, it isn't that quite easy maintaining a contest blog.

Firstly, there are endless contests out there to put up.

Secondly, there are many request from contest organisers in USA to decline. I really need to put a banner up somewhere that we are a Singapore-based blog!

Thirdly, there are tons of annoying comments to delete ranging from Mumbai florist trying to promote their webstore here (What's the connection? I still don't get it) to people promoting their blogs/webstore/porn site at the Kopitiam.

Fourthly, we also want to join contests ourselves! =) So when you see that there are a lot of contest leads at the Kopitiam and we are slow in putting them up, we are actually doing the same thing as you - busy joining contests ourselves lor... hahah

Talking about the difficulties of maintaining a blog sort of led me to ponder about the decisions that coolmrsoftie recently took. (Coolmrsoftie is another
contest blogger). He wanted to close his blog but it's now revived and with a new stylo mylo look. To think that about (was it?) 5 months back, I was thinking of closing this blog too. I could hardly cope then. So when he was feeling stretched, I could totally understand. No wait. Urm... Actually I couldn't. Mr Cool and his team put up a lot more posts than we do here. They sibei on man! How they do it? They don't have to work/study/serve the army one meh? I salute them man.

What I could understand though is his view that if he wants to do something, he wants to do it well. If not don't do. I share that view too. I take pride in this blog that I set up. Never imagine I could have so much fun, done so much with it, learn a lot in terms of online marketing, derive such joy (some of it perverse) and also win prizes from it. CoolMrSoftie's pride may come from other areas but I have no doubt that he takes a lot of pride in it. And he should. It's a pretty cool blog.

So I guess it all boils down to the question why does one want to set up a blog in the first place. If you know why and the reason still stands then I'm sure other problems can be worked out somehow.

And he did work it out it seems. I think many of us were really glad that the blog is now back!

I read that Mr Cool wanted his blog to be made up of a strong community of readers and people sharing and putting up contest posts. That will be nice. But if you want the community to be strong and possibly be the best contest blog around, urm... you have to give it some time you know. So be patient and you should get there. All the best!

I shall openly declare that I love his magazine contests although I honestly don't think the magazine companies or the genuine magazine readers like it ;ppp Ok, Mr Cool, as long as you don't blog about Her World's contest (which I am a regular reader of), and reduce my chance of winning, I'm fine. hahah I do think the magazines meant to hold the contests to reward their paying readers but if many of the non readers end up joining and winning, that will be depriving their regular paying readers the chance to win stuff isn't it? But then again, whose fault really is it? I will say it is the magazines lor. If you run contests like how Her World does it, where most of it is still the cut out original coupon and mail in kind of contests, then there will be no issue. If you want to join, you have to buy a magazine. You buy one magazine, you get one chance at the draw. All's fair.

So if magazines still choose to hold contests the SMS or email way then it's not our fault when we win hor even if we don't read or pay for the mags ;p It's not CoolMrSoftie's fault either. In fact he's the saint to me. So bring it on man :)

On to something else now.

I will like to take this opportunity to clarify a few things if you don't already know by now.

1. I'm not into movies, gaming, movie premiums or goodie bags sort of prizes. Thanks for all your links to win these. So more often than not, I will not blog about them. (Also lack of time la. So must be selective) But please do keep them coming at the Kopitiam for those who are interested.

2. While I'm thankful for all the leads that you folks send in, I'll like to apologise that some of them are sometimes not put up due to the following reasons.
- Poorly organised contests with no closing date, no TnC etcs.
- Contest giving away "Mystery" prizes. Siao. I send in my essay but after that you tell me I won a roll of toilet paper then how?
- I think the contest is a smoke out. Get our particulars but no intention to give out prizes kind. Some contests drag out for months, ask for a lot of particulars and referrals, no skills involved kind and give away only 1 prize. I think this is pretty obvious that the contest organisers just want a huge database.
- I think the contest organisers kelong.
- Contest organisers are impolite and condescending.
- The prizes are just not worth the effort.
- The contest mechanics is easily open to abuse and cheating.
- Contest organisers with poor track record such as substituting prizes etc.

I know some of you sometimes just recommend a contest when you come across one even before having gone through the details yourselves. I understand and that's ok :) I do that to CL sometimes and halfway through posting, he'll discover it is some rubbish contest and he'll grumble at me ;ppp

So my guiding "principal" on what to post really is based on whether I will join that contest or not. So if you have similar tastes for contests as me, all's good. If not, I'll say pay attention more to the posts at the Kopitiam or visit the other contest blogs :)

And how many contest blogs are there now?!?

Contestsg - Specialise in supermarket contests
Cornflict - Specialise in movie and gaming contests
i ♥ Contests - Specialise in mag contests
Kain Highwind Domain - Specialise in samples??
Singapore Draws - Has some of the more unusual international contests.
Surviving the Recession
Where Got Free

So including this blog, there are a total of 8 contests blogs wor!!! Don't you just love Singapore? I don't think there is any other country out there that has 8 contests blog for you to join contests like mad. Haha

3. I've been meaning to say this too. I've never said you cannot canvass for votes here. Once at the koptiam is enough though. 2 max please. 3 times, I'll say: "Enough hor". 4th time onwards they will all get deleted. Actually what's best is if you put up a comment at that particular contest post. It's more permanent anyway. In fact, if you feel strongly about your entry and will like us to support, write me a compelling email. If I am convinced, I will not only give you my vote, I will even promote it here for you here.

4. Don't sell things here.

Finally if any companies are reading this, I have a wish list which I hope you will take into consideration when you plan your future contests to make things more fair more fun.

If you are running a ...

Photo Contest
Please select the winners yourself. If you want public participation, then perhaps choose x number of the pics that best convey your theme and put them up for public voting.

Don't get the public to decide the winners or the shortlist because sometimes the "public size" can be quite small and the massive votes that the winners receive may be made up of just a handful of people. I've seen contests where the prize winners won not because they took a fabulous photo or gave a compelling answer. Their entry is weak yet they won simply because they managed to garner lots of votes. Sorry, I just can't help but think they created a million accounts and voted for themselves. Some entries are so undeserving that you really won't that that the public will vote for them.

Essay, Video, Need-to-put-in-a-lot-of-effort contests
Please always announce the winners on the website. We all put in a lot of effort to join them so we will like, more than any other contests, to know if we'd won or not. Even if we didn't win, never mind. But we need closure. (Hahaha so melodramatic) So state the winners please.

Online Game
- Please ensure they are not hackable.
- Otherwise urm... maybe don't put up scoreboard so hackers won't know how much to cheat, I hope.

Anybody else have any other suggestions or comments? Please put them all down in the comments section. I will link this post under the "contests aside" section and will point companies to this post whenever I get the chance :)

Finally, please run a contest well and treat the winners like how you will like to be treated if you are a winner. Don't cheat. Don't misrepresent. If you are giving away a $100 voucher but require a minimum spending of $200 to use it, say it upfront. If you are giving away 5x $20 vouchers but they cannot be used together, say it upfront. It leaves an extremely bad taste in the mouth when we discover we have won and we are so over the moon but the next thing we know, the prize is not what it seems and we come crashing down. In short, that is call feeling cheated and like a fool.

I remember all the companies who hold great contests and treat the winners as well as they would their customers. They have made it such a pleasant experience which I really appreciate and have returned to these companies many times to patronise them.

As for the companies who made me feel like a third grade customer, you can forget about my business. And I'm probably so consumed by disgust that I have mouthed the lousy experience to at least 10 others.

Gosh I rambled and blabbered on and didn't realise that I have typed so much already! ;p

Time to end off and before I do, I want to say THANK YOU for being a part of my life! Thank you for being here and thank you for being simply you.

May all of us continue to win and win. Huat ah!

Congratulations!

This is his entry and suggestion to Make Face Time on Valentine's Day.

"Today is a special day. We (me and a friend) went to the hospital and celebrate it with our best friend who is getting treatment for cancer there. We brought along chocolate, red roses and her favourite food--macaroni & cheese! Haha! The look of her face is priceless! That was the first time the three of us meet again after graduated! I can't think a better way to spend my Valentine's day. I'm writing in here to let you guys know that I got the idea from this contest. Ain't that fun? So, from the bottom of my heart, a millions "Thank you" for the inspiration^^ Happy Valentine's Day to all compers!"

Contest Lover is stuck in some forest out there so he wasn't able to do this entry and he will like me to give a special mention to Gan PC for submitting the next best suggestion to make face time.

Ok Zainul, now for the administrative part, please email over a copy of your NRIC/Passport as verification of your identity to contestjunkie888@gmail.com together with your mailing address. Kindly do it within 2 weeks. (That should be enough time right?) You can scan or take a photo of your identification documents. Please make sure that the image is sharp and readable. I am afraid I can't notify you by email that you have won because, well I don't have your email address. (Completely overlooked that part ;p) So contact me!

Once again, congratulations Zainul and thank you everyone who participated and sent in your great suggestions on how we can spend quality time with family and friends, not just with lovers, on Valentine's Day.

Cheers!
